    DOCTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY (PSYD)

    If you’re looking for greater exposure to theoretical and practical methodologies, the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) could be for you. You’ll work to gain knowledge with direct application to the professional practice of psychology and counseling.

    Admission to the program requires both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree with the master’s degree in psychology or a related field of study.

    Doctor of Psychology Learning Outcomes

    Knowledge

    Knowledge of psychology concerned with the bases of behavior, history, theories and research, intervention, and psychopathology, while accounting for individual and cultural diversity factors, social aspects, and assessment needs, across the lifespan.

    Communication

    Professional and effective communication skills in the planning, decision-making, collaboration, and consultation, in working with and on behalf of others, within academia and other professional settings.

    Principles

    Ethical and legal principles, within the activities, practice and consultation, supervision, assessments, and research.

    Competence

    Cultural competence in interactions, interventions, assessments, and research.

    Assessment

    Critical thinking and proficiency in psychological assessment and research methodology; plus the examination of assumptions, empirical evidence, and clinical observations to formulate and apply cohesive inferences and recommendations.

    Research

    Scientific research for the professional practice of psychology and to establish proficiency in statistical analysis.

    The PsyD at CalSouthern is an applied degree that is more clinically focused. That differs from a PhD which is often more focused on research and scholarly publication.

    Program Length The program takes an average of 4-5 years to complete. Full-time studies are defined as taking one course per 8-week term over a 6-term calendar year. Students can shorten their time to completion by accelerating their course load and with accepted transfer credits.1 Transfer Credits CalSouthern can accept up to 30 post-graduate, doctoral-level applicable credits in psychology completed at another institution. Eligible courses for transfer must show an earned grade of “B” or better and must be directly related to the PsyD program at CalSouthern.1

    NOTE: The comprehensive examination is a required course, but the internship is optional. Students may enroll in the internship course before or after graduation from the PsyD program.

    CalSouthern is a member of the American InterContinental University System. The System is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    AAPIC Membership Status: CalSouthern is not a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Learners from CalSouthern who intend to pursue a pre-doc internship will not be able to participate in the APPIC Match program.
